Google Names Eric Gehler as a Top Contributor

Since the inception of Google in 1998, the majority of their customer service was delegated to their Product Help Forums. The concept of Google Founder Larry Page was to allow users to help other users. Part of that process was also to identify some of the “best of the best” users in terms of Google product knowledge, expertise and helpfulness. Once identified these users were promoted to the Top Contributor Program. There are approximately 900 Top Contributors in the world covering all the Google Product Help forums Our very own Eric Gehler was promoted to Google Top Contributor for the Web Search Help Forum this past month for his expertise on Google Search. This honor is among the highest Google bestows upon non-employees. But, this is not the only Google title that Eric Gehler has received for his exemplary work with Google. Eric has also been awarded: Google Partners Community Ambassador Google Small Business Community Advisor Google Adwords Forum Rising Star “Becoming a Top Contributor was one of my personal and professional goals. Helping people solve problems has always been a passion and keeping up with all things Google is a must in our industry.  Being a Top Contributor, as well as the other accolades, opens many doors which allow me access and continual communication with Googlers and Google products.  While under a NDA (non disclosure agreement) I cannot discuss individual items, but have access to beta test new initiatives, provide feedback and collaborate with Googlers.” – Eric...

My How SEO Has Changed (Infographic)

Big Oak started out as a web design firm back in January of 2004. But by June of 2006 we had already changed our strategies and become an SEO company. Now we are focused on many other marketing specialties, which you can see here, and now we are a Internet Marketing company in the highest regard. But our roots are in SEO and seeing this infographic from QuickSprout made me wonder if the business world has accepted the idea that SEO is no longer what it was even a year ago, much less five years ago. While not all the changes are listed in this infographic, it does hit the high points, and is a cautionary infographic for online businesses who think they can still bully their way to better rankings by building links through spammy techniques. Better rankings, means better brand building and smarter marketing. In many cases this means more time and more money, but when done correctly the ROI should be there. Content strategy (see how we can help you with your content strategy) has become more important, and that includes content on your site as well as content you are using on third-party sites. Content on your own site needs to answer questions your potential customers are asking and provide thoughtful answers. This proves you are an industry leader and gives them confidence in your company. Content is good, but strategic content that draws in visitors is what is truly...

Top 10 Things the Internet Revolutionized

Whether you believe the internet is a societal blessing or a bane, it unquestionably makes tasks quicker and therefore more convenient.  The dawn of the Digital Age put communication and information at our fingertips, literally and figuratively.  It changed what we think about, care about, and know about.  The following is a list of the top ten features of modern life most dramatically impacted by the web. 10.  Banking The internet revolutionized how the world handles money– mainly by handling less hard currency.  Paperless billing and virtual payments instantly transfer funds, rendering hardcopy statements and checks near obsolete.  Person-to-person payments allow individuals to get and give money with just an email address or a telephone number.  Should you happen to receive a hardcopy check, you can now scan and deposit it instantly. The shift to online banking means fewer trips to local branches which are dwindling in number due to their costly overhead.  New, primarily web-based institutions are transitioning to a reliance on ATMs which quell what remains of the need for hard cash.  While this may all seem rather Orwellian, more banks competing at a reduced cost should theoretically translate to better interest rates. 9.  Celebrity While an internet sensation’s fame is typically fleeting, the web paved a new, nontraditional path to glory– the viral video.  YouTube allows the average Joe to become famous with just a camera and a few keystrokes.  Established stars also have a new venue to increase exposure and bloggers can be read worldwide. Causes also gain quick popularity on the internet.  Passing along social media pipelines from one set of friends to another,...

Google Small Business Community Video by Eric Gehler

Eric Gehler one of our AdWord experts was invited by Google to create a short video for their YouTube channel, Google+ Your Business. Google provided 5 questions they asked him to answer in order to provide advice for a small business getting started on the Web. Here are the 5 questions Google asked Eric to answer: What are some easy ways a company can build an online presence? Why is it important for a small business to have a social media presence? What are some ways a business can reach new customers online? What are some ways that a small business owner can use Google Plus to help their business? What’s the one resource you would recommend to an up-and-coming small business? The video lasts about 3 minutes, at Google’s request, so it only highlights marketing issues which all small businesses should be considering. If you want to know more about building your online business, please give us a call at 804-741-6776. You can ask for me, Shell Harris.
