While any number of us can probably name a dozen national chains off the top of our heads (DeBeers, Zales, Kay Jewelers, and Jared to name a few), not a single one of them shows up in the top 50 for the term â??diamond engagement ringsâ??.

I think another big thing dealing with websites for top companies is that people expect far more out of the site. It must have more quality, content, and professional look to it. Which means theyâ??ll usually do something thatâ??s flash heavy and/or something else that isnâ??t seo-friendly.

When a big corporation decides to write copy for their website, they have to have one of their writers come up with copy that is SEO friendly, then that copy has to be worked over by the marketing people to make sure it works with the brand message, then it has to go to the legal department to make sure that they aren't making any claims that can't be substantiated.

SEO takes work, especially on your website. Between changing titles, adding products, adding content, installing a shopping cart, thereâ??s a lot going on with your website. Those systems are often not SEO friendly. So while Zales might be able to tell their shareholders how much money they sold in the 3rd quarter of 2005, the small jewelry store down the street can figure out how much money they made, how many of each product they sold, and still rank in the top 10 for their big keywords.

The internet is the ultimate leveling ground when it comes to SEO. Its about knowledge and not about money as much when it comes to optimizing a site.

Hi,

I enjoyed reading your article, namely because it's written in a very understandable manner.
One thing that I notice that can bring visitors to one's website/blog is by writing about subjects that are not mentioned by many people. And if the subject is recent, then even better. This way there's a bigger probability that search engines may find your article.
Using not so commonly used words can also get some visitors.

Kind regards,

José

I agree. There is always a chance for the small guys. BUT..only in some industries. In others, the big guys have a good SEM team besides brand recognition and is almost impossible to beat them.

Great Post! Some of the worst optimized sites I've seen are from very large Enterprise type companies. It's not that these guys are idiots. It's more often than not because the guy in charge know's what to do but can't get it implemented because of red tape and legacy backend systems.
