Social Bookmarking – SEO Tip Week 8

52 SEO TipsWhat is Social Bookmarking?
Social bookmarking involves saving bookmarks (web addresses) to a public Web site such as Digg or Del.icio.us so you can access these bookmarks from any computer connected to the web. Your favorite bookmarks are also available for others to view and follow as well, hence the social aspect. If you wish to create your own social bookmarks, you must register with a social bookmarking site (we have many listed below). No you are able to store bookmarks, tag your bookmarks, and share with anyone interested in your bookmarks.

Hopefully you can see the value and power of social bookmarks. You can think of it as viral or guerrilla marketing in a way. It can be a powerful grassroots method of marketing your site. Be careful though, like everything else on the web you can spam these sites and make your list of bookmarks appear unappealing or an obvious marketing ploy which will net you very little.

Keep it honest
Bookmark sites you generally would like to share or feel are valuable, which of course can contain bookmarked web addresses of your own site. If enough people agree with the value of a bookmark you have placed they will bookmark it to and as the popularity grows your site traffic will grow.

Don’t abuse this by submitting every page of your site, try to be judicious and think about what pages of your site may be helpful and of interest to other web surfers.

All things must end
At some point you will reach a place where you are no longer drawing significant traffic from your older bookmarks, but that’s okay. Your social bookmark page should be included in the search engine’s cached sites and they are following your links like any normal web user. In fact, you have created an external link to your site that should be using useful keyword text in the link. The real beauty of this is the fact that others are also providing free one-way links from their own social bookmark pages. So even after the traffic from the bookmarks slow you have the added benefit of a grass roots linking campaign providing solid links to your site, increasing your site’s ranking in the search engines.

While you don’t want to base your SEO campaign on this one technique it should be in your SEO toolbox of tasks.

A Good Start for Social Bookmarking Websites
Here are some of the better social bookmarking websites. It wouldn’t be feasible to become a member of all of these but choosing a few couldn’t hurt. Good article. It used to be extremely difficult to get links. Before Google started tracking how one got links it was just a matter of buying links… The good old days. Now with social bookmarking sites one can get not only links but traffic.

    This stuff is so cool!

Do you feel having outbound links to every one of these bookmarking sites hurts you seo? All of them seem to work based off of URLs going directly to “their” site. Should people hide these with JavaScript?, because it would appear that this would make the links reciprical in nature and not one way links. Is there an effective way to hide links with JavaScript? Although… I guess you could technically use nofollow.

I have been using some of those sites for SEO purpose and it has brought us some good traffic!

Social bookmarking has limited appeal for the the SEO consultant. We don’t count on it to increase site rankings directly, but indirectly it can increase awareness which may eventually provide additional natural linking.

Even though this is now a little outdated in terms of internet age, the concept of social bookmarking is still alive and kicking! One way to be able to create an account on each of the 15 listed sites (and now in 2008, 50+ more), is to use a semi-automated one like socialmarker.com which allows you to fill out a form once, and as it takes you to a different social bookmark site, it prefills almost all of it for you, and you just have to review it and hit submit! The part that takes the longest is probably setting up an account for each site, which includes email confirmations! But hey, no pain, no gain, right?

I think we can use social bookmarking not for SEO purpose only, but the more important thing is we can describe our idea so people can understand what we want. SEO impact to our site is just bonus for us.

Thought I’d come back and comment again. Thanks for the list of social bookmarking sites – I started with Digg yesterday and low and behold within 3 hours the links showed up within the first 3 pages of Google. Today they’re all close to the top of the first page.

I’mm really impressed with this technique and will continue to use it in the future. Thanks again!!

Couple of SEO factors that can be added here:

some social bookmarking sites such as delicious nofollow your bookmarks other’s don’t – its always useful to work out which ones.

Another useful tip would be to import bookmarks from one main site into the others. This is often a lot less trouble even than trying to use a widget to submit to a lot of social bookmarking sites at once.

  22. By techbranch on Sep 10, 2008 | Reply

Good article though dated. Many Social bookmarking sites do not allow crawlers to follow links, thus the links do not help the page rank. However I guess they are ok if someone actually stumbles upon it. I still think having great page content accurate meta tags with solid a solid web design combined with quality links from other pages of similar content contribute best to the end users experience.
However, I have to admit. I do like the social networking sites : )

The key to every siteâ??s success is through good marketing and promotion. Even if you have really good and substantial content on your site, you still need to promote it to avoid getting left behind the competition. In the internet community, the best way to achieve an increase in website traffic and revenue is to take advantage of social media. When used correctly, this tool can provide a platform for brand awareness, exposure, networking, and a huge boost in traffic & sales.

Since there are so many different definitions of social media, letâ??s clarify what weâ??re talking about here. Social media are primarily Internet- and mobile-based tools for sharing and discussing information. The term most often refers to activities that integrate technology, telecommunications and social interaction, and the construction of words, pictures, videos and audio. This interaction, and the manner in which information is presented, depends on the varied perspectives and “building” of shared meaning among communities, as people share their stories and experiences.
